phrases to outline his book, Food Rules. This was a book recommended to me by my art teacher. There are beautiful illustrations done my Maira Kalman to help bring Pollan’s ideas and rules to life. I enjoyed not only Kalman’s art, but also Pollan’s humor throughout the book. For example, rule number 7: “avoid food products containing ingredients that a third-grader cannot pronounce.” While this may seem absurd, when you think about it, it is actually true. How many third graders can pronounce Erythritol or Xylitol?

One of the most interesting and practical rules is number 13: shop the peripheries of the supermarket and stay out of the middle. I had really never thought about how on the outsides of most supermarkets there is dairy, meats and produce, while in the middle aisles are the more processed foods. This is something that everyone can put into practice, but I know it is still hard. Even when I want to eat healthy, sometimes I still get drawn in by my old friend: junk food. This is why I think it is best that Pollan ends his book by saying it’s okay to break the rules every once in a while. The problem is: who can be the judge about how often is every one in a while? Still, I think this was a very worthwhile read, and Pollan’s humor and Kalman’s illustrations worked very well together to paint the basic rules of food.
